YUHA was the second gay student organization in Canada, formed a year after the University of Toronto Homophile Association. From the first YUHA newsletter, published in November 1970:

In the beginning… Encouraged by the success of the U. of T. Homophile Association (founded Oct. 69), a group of York students believed that this year the time was right for the inauguration of a similar organization on the York campus. An established and innovative institution (witness the motto: the way must be tried), York has traditionally espoused the credo of the humanities: nothing human is alien to me. This enlightened environment is appropriate to an effort at increasing awareness and understanding between people of differing beliefs, including differing sexual and emotional orientations.
