Paving the way to York’s leadership in critical women’s, gender, and sexuality scholarship.

Though Women’s Studies courses had been offered at York since 1972, Women’s Studies was formalized as a program in 1983. The graduate program, the first Women’s Studies program in Canada, was established in 1992. The School of Women’s Studies was officially founded in 1998, and that year, two York students were the first in Canada to earn PhDs in Women’s Studies. The School further evolved into the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies, with Sexuality Studies introduced as a program in 2004.
